Dr Warren – Notes on Respiratory Disease and EIPH

Early in my career as a racetrack practitioner, I realized respiratory disease and Exercise Induced Pulmonary Hemorrhage (EIPH) were major causes of poor performance over and above musculoskeletal injuries, which I and all other people were trying to solve.

We used many things to solve this problem, including immune adjuvants, like Equimune or EqStim, to increase Immune Globulin levels with minor success.

With the help of a cardiologist, in 1968, I used Lasix (furosemide) for the first time in racing, to treat a couple of fillies that bled profusely, and both stopped bleeding and went onto become Stakes winning fillies.  That single drug, because of its ability to increase efficiency of the heart lowered pulmonary pressure and the slight dehydration prevented any bleeding.  This was a defining moment, that is still the gold standard in the treatment of racehorses to overcome EIPH, a severe problem for flat racing and barrel racing thoroughbreds.

Next, in 1998 came the advent of Cellular immune restoration and balance, with a formulation that is now used extensively both to prevent and treat any respiratory disease including EIPH, known as BIOPRO ARMOUR® and later, the addition of NANOMAX silver solution for a synergistic effect.

Over the years we have seen thousands of horses thrive and perform at their utmost potential and recover more quickly and eliminate the “bounce” effect.  They eat much better, experience higher energy levels, when travelling long distances, they overcome stress, and very seldom get sick.  Thus, they probably will be able to perform and not miss the race by popping a temperature.

Several examples of this are a horse named Goldencents, when arriving here from the Preakness was totally worn out and very “dull in the shell”, poor appetite, and thought to need 3 months to return to form.  We started nebulizing him 3 days a week and in 10 days he perked up and in 21 days he was back in full training for which his trainer was very happy.  He was also a BC winner.

Another case was Gunrunner, he was treated daily throughout his career and went to Dubai to race, was second, and came back to America, continued training without any measurable time off, never lost another race that year and was named HOY. Shipping very long distances to foreign countries usually knocks them out 90 days for recovery.  Incidentally, the untreated horse that beat Gunrunner never won another race on his return to racing.

One of our trainers imports a lot of horses from Europe and immediately after they arrive, we treat them three (3) days a week, which keeps them from getting sick, and they gain weight, haircoat blooms with dapples, and they get back in shape more quickly from the stress of shipping.  Likewise, we usually start the 2 YO horses two (2) days a week to be sure the stress of training doesn’t affect their immune system in a negative way and keep the respiratory tract as clean as possible.

To summarize, this combination of BIOPRO ARMOUR® and NANOMAX® silver solution has become the Triple Crown protocol for treating respiratory diseases naturally and no other available pharmaceutical or supplements exist that can duplicate what this protocol can achieve in both prophylaxis, healing, and keeping the respiratory system free of disease, which in turn, means overall increased health and performance for your Equine athlete.
